SCHOOL SUBSIDIES

AIDING LOCAL INTEREST.

NEED FOB EAKLY RESTORATION.

The need for an early restoration of Government subsidies on voluntary contributions for school purposes was stressed by Mr. G. F. Griffiths, president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, when he was interviewed by a News representative at New Plymouth last night. Mr. Griffiths said that it had required years of persistent work on the part of teachers to arouse a live local interest in school affairs, and that the system of subsidies had been of great assistance in this direction. The discontinuance oi the payment of subsidies had disheartened workers for education and in some districts had seriously weakened local interest.

This meant that schools suffered materially and that their work was less effective, since the teacher necessarily relied upon the enlightened support of the local community. He hoped that subsidies on voluntary contributions would be restored at the earliest possible moment.
