TEACHER LEAVING

FAREWELL AT INGLEWOOD. MISS TARRY AND BASKETBALL. The Inglewood Girls’ Basketball Club and the school committee combined on Tuesday night in farewelling Miss Tarry. Between dancing items were supplied by Mr. L. Kohn, Mr. P. Basham and Mr. D. Sutherland. A presentation was made to Miss Tarry on bahalf of the Inglewood Club and one from the Taranaki executive. Mrs. Kohn spoke in praise of Miss Tarry’s work in organising the, first basketball team in T ranaki, and of the way that she had put the game on its feet throughout the province. When they sent a team to compete in the Dominion tournament this year it compared favourably with the rest of New Zealand. Although. Miss Tarry had had much to do with provincial basketball, she had always found time to help the local team. Her departure from Taranaki caused regret to all basketball enthusiasts, who realised how much her enthusiasm and hard work had meant to the game. Miss Tarry thanked Mrs. Kohn for her remarks and expressed her regret at leaving a district which she felt to be her home. She considered that her work in connection with basketball had been made possible only by the loyal co-operation of the executive, especially the secretary, Mrs. Kohn, who had always assisted her in every way and

who had worked as hard as she for the good of the game in Taranaki. Mr. M. Sutherland, chairman of the school committee, regretted . that Miss Tarry should be leaving the district after such a long service there. She had created a record, he thought, in that she had taught for 25 years at the same school. It said much for her efficiency and it was only through the falling off of the school attendance that she was compelled to leave. The committee felt deep regret that the lowering of the grade of the school had made it necessary for them to lose a teacher of whose competency they were so assured. He intimated that the committee was to present a framed photograph of the staff and committee as a memento of her services to the school. 1
