TOWN V. COUNTRY

INGLEWOOD SCHOOLS AT PLAY.

Basketball and rugby games.

The combined Inglewood town schools met the combined Inglewood country schools in annual football and basketball matches at Inglewood on Wednesday in fine, sunny weather. Country lost both basketball matches by small margins to much taller opponents, but won the football by a convincing margin. Both football teams were well matched in size, but the Country backs combined and handled much better than Town. The teams were:—

Country: B. Shields, N. Instone (capt.), B. .O’Byrne, T. Herlihy, R. Kerr, R. Shepherd, T. McCullum, Lister, R. Knowles, Salisbury, W. Karalus, B. Riley, Campbell, M. Jackson, G. Long. Town: P. Curd, Scott, James, Hislop, Ulenberg, Ward, Reeve, Kennedy, Piwari, Crossan, Kilpatrick, Thomson. Curtis, Maetzig, Bishell. After five minutes of loose play McCullum fed his backs from the loose at halfway, the ball travelling unerringly along the line to Instone, who made a strong run and scored at the comer. The Country forwards kept their backs well supplied with the ball with the result that the whole line handled once again for Instone to cap off another pretty movement with a try, which he converted. Country kept Inglewood in its own territory. From a loose ruck near the line McCullum was nearly . over. From the ensuing scrum McCullum received, shook off several tackles and dived over for a determined try. Country kept up the attack,’ all the backs handling again to send Instone over for his third try. From loose play near the line Lister picked up and scored by the posts. Country 17 v. Town 0. On the resumption Town attacked determinedly and parried play into the Country twenty-five, where James kicked a good field goal. Town kept up the pressure for ten minutes but the defence was sound. Country reasserted itself, Instone scoring two more tries, one of which Shields converted, making the final score: Country 25 v. Town 4. The feature of the match was the fine passing and understanding of the Country backs, there being not one forward pass during the game. Mr. Kay refereed. The basketball teams were:— t

Country A: Hazel James, Phyllis Hayman, Gladys Huzziff, Vera Nolan, Margaret Herlihy, Nyra Schimanski, Nancy Knowles, Gladys Ackland, Emeline Lister.

Country B: Nora Jackson, Phyllis Karalus, Margery Hucker, Dorie Corney, Eileen Bowling, Norma Ward, Sylvia Manning, Margaret Shepherd, Joyce Salisbury. Town A: B. Sutton, B. Crossan, J. Peters, P. Crozier, Dodunski, Kennedy, M. Dodunski, B. Scott, M. Ulenberg, Town B: A. McCracken, P. Peters, J. Dodunski, M. Mischevski, P. Moriati, Sylvia Barry, Audrey Bennett. Both games were hard fought and keenly contested, the superior height and combination of the town girls prevailing. The scores were:— Town A 16 v. Country A 11. Town B 5 v. Country B 3.

Miss Tarry refereed the games. To-day at 1.30 p.m. the Inglewood country football and basketball teams will play their annual matches with the New Plymouth Country Schools’ Group at Inglewood. The boys’ match will be the curtain-raiser to the Inglewood v. Stratford senior Rugby match at Jubilee Park, Inglewood, while the girls’ matches will be played on the Inglewood Basketball Club’s courts.
