H.M.A.S. VENDETTA

VISIT OF AUSTRALIAN SHIP. ARRIVAL AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The projected programme of entertainment for the officers and crew .of the Australian destroyer Vendetta, which will arrive at New Plymouth early to-morrow morning, has been issued by the New Plymouth borough authorities. The vessel will leave again on Thursday, but much has been crammed into the three days of the visit, including tennis, cricket, bowls, athletics, fishing, mountaineering, and a dance. The days on which the Vendetta will be open to the public will be arranged after the vessel’s arrival, and it is expected that much interest will be taken, as the destroyer is a type of warcraft little seen in New Zealand. After leaving New Plymouth the Vendetta, which is under the command of Lieut.-Conunander A. S. Rosenthal, will rejoin the rest of the Australian squadron at present in New Zealand waters. 7he programme for to-morrow is:—

6.30 a.m.: Warship arrives. 9.30 a.m.: The Mayor will pay the official visit to the ship. Official calls of members of Parliament, chairman of the Harbour Board and military authorities will be paid at the same time. 10 a.m.: The, captain-in-command will return all official calls at harbour board offices. ’ 2 p.m.: Cricket match at Pukekura Park, for which the arrangements are in the hands of Mr. H. J. Larkin. 6.30 p.m.: Evening amateur athletic sports at Pukekura Park. Races will be placed on the programme for officers and men. In addition trout fishing for officers is being arranged by Messrs. A. Little and W. S. Bamsey, and officers and men have been invited by the New Plymouth League Cycle Club to attend a special naval dance at the Agricultural Hall.. Arrangements are being made for pigshooting expeditions on Wednesday, and Mr. W. H. Quickfall is organising a party of officers. Mr. J. Smith is arranging similar entertainment for petty officers and men. Conducted by members of the Taranaki Alpine Club, a party of officers will Leave the ship at 4 a.m. on Thursday to climb Mount Egmont, returning to the town about 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Mr. L. Lovell, secretary of the club, is in charge of the arrangements. A visit to Waiter a is being organised for the afternoon of Thursday, details of tennis, cricket and bowls to be- arranged after the ship’s arrival.
