HURWORTH SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. DRAVITSKIS OUTSTANDING. The Hurworth district held its annual sports meeting in Mr. W. A. Adlam’s' paddock on Saturday. The weather was fine but overcast. There was a very good x attendance and events were keenly contested. The chopping was of a high standard, while the sawing of Dravitski Bros, was equal to the best in Taranaki. While not drawing as many starters as usual the running was very good and some close finishes were witnessed. A great asset to the meeting was a radio announcer. The afternoon tea and sweets stalls were kept busy throughout the day. The Hurworth hall was crowded to capacity in the evening, When the sports dance was held. Many visitors were present- from New Plymouth and surrounding some coming as far as from South Taranaki. McNeill’s Dance Band played bright music. Mrs. F. J. King played an extra waltz. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. R. Gilbert and V. Dravitski. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Gredig and Mr. V. Pepperell. The committee, which was largely responsible for the success of the gathering, was: President, Mr. F. Salisbury; committee, Messrs. R. Adlam, R. Gilbert, L. Gilbert, F. Salisbury, R. King, V. Dravitski, M. Dravitski and F. Salisbury. The handicappers were Messrs. H. Farmer, P. Gilbert, R. Gilbert, F. Salisbury, H. Allen and L. Gilbert; judges, Messrs. R. Gilbert, S. Campbell, M. Dravitski, R. Smith; starters, Messrs. J. Burkett, R. j Adlam and S. Campbell; ’ gatekeepers, Messrs. A. Rider, K. Webb, F. Salisbury and S. Campbell; joint secretaries, Messrs R. King and V. Dravitski. Stall tenders were: Afternoon tea and supper, Mesdames P. Gilbert, F. King, J. Burkett, E. Pepperell, S. Campbell, F. Salisbury and J. Mischefski, and Misses L. and M. King; sweet stall, Miss N. Gilbert and Miss W. Pepperell. Following are the results of the events:— Children’s Races. Boys: 12 to 13, E. Gilbert 1, T. Okey 2; 8 to 12, W. Cole 1, J. Committee men’s race, 100 yards: L. Gilbert (Byds) 1, V. Dravitski (scr) 2, P. Adlam (scr) 3. Local 100 yards: V. Dravitski (3yds) 1, P. Adlam (7yds) 2, R. King (2yds) 3. Boys’ 9-inch chop, under 16: N. Adlam 40 l-ss. 1, L. Salisbury 455. 2. Novice 10-inch chop: J. Clements 1, R. Adlam 2, M. Dravitski 3. Single women’s 75 yards: Miss M. Farmer 1, Miss S. Sullivan and Miss I. Salisbury equal 2. Married women’s race, 75 yards: Mrs. Duffy 1, Mrs. L. Wisnewski 2, Mrs. Mischewski 3. Local 10-inch handicap chop: F. Salisbury (4s) 1, R. Adlam (12s) 2, Ennis (20s) 3. Double-handed 12-inch sawing, two cuts: M. and V. Dravitski (scr) 1,- C. Lockely and J. Clements (scr) 2, C. Ward and T. Peters (10s) 3. This event was easily the most popular during the day. Dravitski Bros, took 7s. to take their first block off but they lost at the start of the second. Their two cuts were completed before any of the other competitors had done one. 100 yards open handicap: O. Balsom (Byds) 1, Wells (4yds) 2, M. Dravitski (4yds) 3. Maiden 12-inch chop: R. Adlam (10s) 1, C; Brown (10s) 2, J. Clements (21s) 3. Open mile run: J. Pearce (140yds) 1, V. Dravitski (scr) 2, M. Dravitski (60yds) 3. Pearce ran a very fine race, being unpaced throughout. The scratch man, V. Dravitski, caught up with the 75 yards men after half a mile had been covered. He could not catch Pearce, who won by 50 yards. Tug-of-war: Salisbury's team defeated Clarke’s team by two inches. Salisbury’s team gained the advantage from the start and held it throughout. Final: Clement’s team defeated Salisbury's team by 21 inches." Salisbury’s team gained the advantage at the start but could not hold it. Local cycle race: R. Adlam 1, Ron. Adlam 2, R. King 3. R. Adlam, who started from scratch, was too good for his opponents, winning by 300 yards. Ron. Adlam was second with R. King 50 yards behind. There were five starters.
