EGMONT NOLAN CUP FIELD 'J’HERE are few more popular events among owners of good hacks run in the North Island than the Nolan Cup, the wellendowed hack highlight on to-day’s Egmont programme. Even though the acceptances have reduced the field considerably, and there are one or two rather surprising defections, a fine field re-, mains to give promise of a thrilling finish.

Had Davistock recorded Iris illuminating Paul Memorial Handicap victory before the Egmont acceptances closed his connections probably would not have declined his engagement. At present Davistock appears to be a match for most hacks racing. It certainly needs a hack well out of the ordinary to beat a performer like Cherry King, and what is more, beat him so convincingly. After his Trentham and Wanganui victories Palm also seemed to have bright prospects, but his engagement also was declined.

Even though she seems to be becoming a secend-day horse there is certain to be good Hawera support for St. Clara. The Grand Court mare won the Stratford Plate with consummate ease, and the important hack races seem to see her produce her best form.

Of the other Taranaki hacks engaged Tahurangi ran quite a good race in the Taranaki Cup, but failed to come up to anticipations when back among the hacks on the concluding day. Dombey, a comparative newcomer to the Hawera training tracks, has several

good performances to his credit, and he has been a winner on metropolitan courses. Courtega again filled a place at New Plymouth, and she should not be troubled by the eight-and-a-half furlongs’ journey. At Trentham prior to Christmas Courtega ran an exceptionally fast mile for a hack performer, and at the New Plymouth holiday meeting she ran fast sprint times.

Was Trentham Winner. Hailing from Feilding way is Lapel, a likely form prospect. After winning over nine furlongs nt Awapuni at holi-day-time Lapel lately beat some of the best hacks racing in the Melrose Handicap at Trentham.

Pladie also figures in the Tokaora Handicap earlier in the day, but if he be reserved for the Nolan Cup the Otaki performer should need to be respected. Both Ingenuity and Onewhetu - enhanced their, prospects by their solid New Plymouth showings, while Bonnie Vale comes with fair Hawke’s Bay form.
