FIVE WICKETS; NO RUNS

NEW PLYMOUTH SLUMPS SIDE DISMISSED FOR 152 RUNS. WESTERN PARK TWO FOR 41. I With one wicket down for 71 and four for 125 New Plymouth appeared to be set for a big score at Pukekura Park in the first day’s play of the match agaihst Western Park. But then occurred an amazing collapse, five wickets falling while the total was 137. The side was all out for 152. Western Park lost two for 41. Parkin and Kinsella batted solidly and rather luckily at times in the opening partnership. At one stage the fielding of the Park team was poor but it improved and at the end was good. Parkinson and Spedding again troubled the batsmen wno after a good start filled badly to make any stand at all. With Kinsella and Parkin playing carefully and profiting from mistakes in the field the score mounted steadily despite a rapid changing of bowlers. Opening out Parkin hit Wilson for four fours in two overs but he played over one well tossed up and 1 was clean bowled for 40. Nasmith was never comfortable in playing Parkinson and after making 13 was dismissed l.b.w. Allen the sixth bowler to be tried gained immediate success when Parkinson, in slips caught Larkin. Loewenthal made a brisk 17 before G. Ewart took a running left hand catch on the leg. These two catches seemed to put life into the desultory fielding. Kinsella played a rising ball from Parkinson to slips, but, was dropped. He did the same to the next and the wicketkeeper Bullot held it. Kinsella in making 41 had been slow and had given two chances in slips. However, he had made a valuable contribution to the New Plymouth score which was then five for 137. The rot started when his wicket fell.

■Spedding at the other end took three wickets in a maiden over. Wayne, in attempting a drive, failed to cover the break and skied the ball to Allen in slips. Next ball, Davison made a feeble forward shot, being caught by the bowler. A. Clarke sent the sixth to Grant, who took a good catch low down at square leg. Off the second ball of Parkinson’s next over Bullot behind the wickets took a brilliant catch at his feat. C. G. Clarke and Groombridge batting with' caution added 15 when Groombridge attempting to hit Spedding was well stumped by Bullot. The rain, which had started during New Plymouth’s innings, became thicker and the light grew worse as the Park opening men G. Ewart and Allen took strike. In' Groombridge’s first over Allen playing forward hit' a simple catch to A. Clarke at mid-on. A. Ewart and G. Ewart took no risks, especially with C. G. Clarke, whp was keeping an excellent length. After 50 minutes’ play the score had crept to 35 when a change of bowling saw Nasmith’s first ball dismiss A. Ewart l.b.w. for 14. Wilson and G. Ewart added six runs when an appeal against the light was upheld. ' .The umpires were Messrs. C. O. Berg and H. Sowerby. NEW PLYMOUTH. Parkin, b Wilson 40 Kinsella, c Bullot, b. Harris made 21 not out, and Clegg 17. SHOCK FOR WESTERN PARK. 34 helped Lawrence lift the score from: 92 to 135 for the sixth wicket. Elder, 10 not cut, did his best as tenth man, blit the innings closed with the side 14 runs short. Jones took four for 23 and Spedding, a regraded senior, one for 65. 82 FOR THE OPENING WICKET. OLD BOYS’ DEFEAT OF WAITARA. Waitara’s first defeat was achieved narrowly by Old Boys at Waitara, largely because of good bowling by Somerton at the end of Waitara’s innings and an opening partnership of 82 by Sole and Cawthray. Attrill, 33, and Gilmore, 19, scored 44 for Waitara’s first wicket before Gilmore was caught and bowled by Saunders,. and Jupp with 34 helped the score later to reach 131. Somerton took five for 15 and Saunders three for 29. Sole bowled three no balls and Somerton four. Sole, 48, and Cawthray, 23, gave Old Boys a good start, and although none of the others made double figures the . seventh wicket did not fall till 119 nor the eighth till 130.
