HAWERA EASILY BEATEN TOTAL PASSED WITHOUT LOSS. S. BETTS AND REG. EDEN BAT WELL A sound first wicket partnership between Reg. Eden and S. Betts gave Kaponga a win over Hawera at Hawera on Saturday. Rain in the early stages of the game threatened an abandonment but after tea there was a temporary improvement. Rain descended again and continued steadily, though not heavily, almost throughout. The conditions hampered the bowlers, but on the wet grass the fielding of both teams was very creditable. When the home team's first innings total of 93 was passed Kaponga’s opening pair retired in favour of Ross Eden and V. Betts. Mainly through the agency of the former the score was carried to 123, when A. Jennings, who bowled only one and a-half overs, sensationally dismissed three batsmen in four balls. Play was then discontinued with five wickets down for 127 runs. Reg. Eden and S. Betts each gave an almost chanceless display. Both scored well all round the wicket. Penny and Des Forges were Hawera’s opening batsmen. Des Forges had made five of a total of ten when he was bowled by S. Betts, whose next ball skittled Meuli’s stumps before he had scored. The next seven wickets fell fairly rapidly without any of the batsmen reaching double figures, except Fraser, who scored ten. Three catches were taken off Burke’s bowling, while S. Betts and Ross Eden claimed two victims each. With nine wickets down for 69 runs. J<ara and Sparrow carried the total to 9J. before the latter was caught by Reg. Eden off Harrison. Reg. Eden and S. Betts quietly opened Kaponga’s innings- to the bowling of Fleet and Fraser. Betts scored faster and when the score was 32 he had 28 to his credit. He continued to score freely and Eden’s total also mounted until they passed Hawera’s total of 93. Betts’ contribution was 60, including six boundary hits, and Eden’s 31, including five boundaries. Ross Eden compiled 21 before he was caught. Pascoe followed and, after hitting a boundary, was bowled by Jennings, who secured an l.b.w. decision against Cuff with his next ball. Seven Hawera bowlers were tried, but Jennings was the only one who secured any wickets. His average was three for 12 in 12 balls. HAWERA. First Innings. Penny, b S. Betts ® Des Forges, b S.
