BIRCH’S 29 IN ONE OVER NEW PLYMOUTH OLD BOYS 179. SCHOOL’S PAINSTAKING 84 FOR ONE The inclusion of Arch. Wilson, the exStratford cricketer now of Auckland, in the New Plymouth High School team against Old Boys on Saturday at the school ground had the indirect result of providing one over of T the must hectic cricket seen at New Plymouth for a long time.' Wilson, who took six wickets for 77, skippered the School team, which dismissed Old Boys for 179 compiled in about two hours and by painstaking play reached 84 for one wicket when the first day’s play ended. Wilson, whose specialities are slow lobs with an acute' leg break, accounted for Eggleton in his: first over by conceding 11 runs off the first six balls and then tricking the batsman with a straight one. Later he camh on when Birch was. set and had scored 54. In that over Birch ran amok against the slow bowler. and hit the first five balls for six, four, six, six, six. The next he skied to a vacant place for a single, Lash scored a single off the seventh ball and the wily Wilson scattered Birch’s stumps next delivery with'an innocent straight one. Altogether it was a bright over. . Apart from- Birch’s well-played 83 the Old Boys’ innings was not- outstanding, Christensen, Eggleton and Lash scored freely while they were at the crease and the score reached 159 before the fifth wicket fell. Wilson and Larkin, however, disposed of the- tail cheaply, Larkin’s average coming to three wickets for 20. ‘

The High School teams during the holidays do not' seem overburdened 'with confidence. ■ Probably with memories of the poor scores of the last match, Waters and Johns were very much , on the defensive against good bowling after Broughton had been dismissed for one, ’but when Old Boys’ fast battery had failed to dislodge the pair in the drifting rain the storing became faster, Johns particularly opening out into good drives. From a feeling of inferiority that was apparent early the two placed School within fair reach of a first innings *win by the time rain stopped play soon after six o’clock. Details are:— OLD BOYS.
