GENERAL ITEMS. Salvationists Farewelled. Adjutant and Mrs. W. L. Armstrong were farewelled by Hawera Salvationists and friends at the Salvation Army hall on Monday night before their departure for Whangarei. Those who made valedictory speeches referred to the unselfish manner in which they had helped others. Proof of their untiring efforts was the strengthening of the corps during their 12 months’ sojourn at Hawera. The speakers expressed regret that they were leaving and wished them a happy and successful future. Mrs. Armstrong thanked the speakers and Adjutant Armstrong said they had been strengthened by the loyalty and friendship of the townspeople. Load of Furniture Burned. At 5.30 p.m. on Monday a lorry heavily laden with household furniture and some merchandise caught fire at Waverley. It is surmised that a pack in line with the exhaust caught fire. The lorry was stopped opposite the fire station. Fire extinguishers were used but proved of little value and in a few seconds the load was well ablaze. By this time the brigade had two leads of hose pouring on the fire. The furniture was valuable and the only item of importance saved was the cutlery. The lorry was little damaged. The owner of the furniture was Mr. Morton Jones, who was shifting from New Plymouth to Wellington. Manutahi Personals. Mrs. A. S. Barclay and Mrs. W. Barclay and families are spending three weeks at Ngamotu beach. Miss G. Denby and Mr. J. Denby have returned to Lower Hutt after spending the holidays with their brother, Mr. S. R. Denby. Miss M. Edwards, who has been visiting Mrs. P. Wills, has returned to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. R. Carpenter, and Miss E. Moss, Wellington, who have been visiting friends in the district, have returned home. Mis. J. Taylor, who has been a patient of the Patea Hospital, has returned home. Mr. B. Jackson, who has been visiting Mrs. E. O’Sullivan, has returned to Wanganui. Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. E. McLaughlan are visiting Mrs. G. Scown.
