Mr. H. Priest, a well-known English author, who arrived at Wellington on Monday by the Maunganui, left in the afternoon for Auckland. He has recently been making a stay at Papeete. The King has approved of the appointment of Mr. A. J. Clerk Kerr, British Minister at Stockholm, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Baghdad in succession to Mr. Francis Humphries, who will relinquish his appointment in the spring, states a British Official Wireless message.
The death occurred at Opunake early yesterday morning of Mr. William Aitken, aged 85 years, one of the earliest residents of the district. He arrived in the Opunake district from Palmerston North over 55 years ago, when he took up a farm at Taungatara, and later on the Oeo Road. He had resided in Opunake township for the past 20 years. Mr. Aitken is survived by his wife, two sons, Messrs. William and Albert Aitken, Opunake, and two daughters, Mrs. Moffatt, Pukekohe, and Mrs. Pepperill, Waitara. One son, Mr. .Andrew Aitken, was killed in the Great War.
