Dissatisfaction-- with the number of competitions held by angling clubs, which he stated encouraged “pot-hunting,” was voiced by Mr. J. D. Speirs at the monthly meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatisation Society. One competition, for instance, had lasted for two and a-half days and two competitors between them had caught 110 fish. Members considered that the limit should be reduced to 15, but it was stated that nothing could be done until th; next annual meeting. Mr. J. JJ*. R. Darragh stated that there was an understanding with the Southland Anglers’ Club that fish under 12 inches would not be weighed in, and it was suggested that the other clubs should be circularised asking them to make a similar rule. On the motion of Mr. Speirs it was decided to write to all the clubs suggesting that competitions be limited to one day and that fish under lOin. be not taken.
