HAWERA TRACK WORK

SILVER WINGS STRIKES HERSELF. CYNICAL KID’S GOOD WORK-OUT. Increased interest in the training operations of Labour Day candidates was shown at the Hawera racecourse on Saturday. Mr. H. Simpson, Waverley, owner of Silver Wings, was out to see his mare worked. Silver Wings, on Thursday morning, sprinted a very fast three furlongs and on cooling out was found to have given herself a knock that necessitated attention. On Saturday after galloping she seemed to favour her leg a little, but any damage would not be manifest until later. Most fast work was accomplished on the plough track which was in firstclass order. C. Jackson was first out sending Aga Khan (Cole) over seven furlongs. Accompanied by Diagano (Robinson) the half-mile was reached in 535, where some of Diagano’s gear coming disarranged he was pulled up. Aga Khan continued, running out his seven furlongs in 1.33 and finishing strongly. In a working gallop over seven furlongs The Tiger (Robinson) finished up his task nicely, well in front of Kaola (Edgecombe). The last six furlongs occupied 1-21, Kaola held on well. Copey did strong pace-work, striding out well. A length each separated Colossus (Edgecombe), Harvest Moon (Robinson) and Green Linnet in that order at the end of a four-furlong sprint in 525, the first two furlongs being cut out in 255. Cynical Kid hit out pleasingly in two rounds of solid work. The last six furlongs were done in 1.22. This was a capital work-out, as the hunter did the final two furlongs in 265. Friesland (Coyle) finished a length and a-half in front of Gold Gleam (Simpson) in a try-out over six furlongs irt 1.18%, the first three furlongs taking 395. The hurdlers Sandlark (Feasey) and Crennatown (Fearn) were companions over six furlongs and in a good set to up the straight, Crennatown just put his head in front on the post in 1.19%. Going evenly all the way, Silk Sox (Feasey) took 1.20 for six furlongs alone. On the grass, Newform (Fearn) and La Poupee’s Mint Leaf—Red Gleam three-year-old (Simpson) were again sprinted together, this time over three furlongs. Running straighter than- his opponent, Newform finished a shade in front in 38s, good time for maidens. Benedictine (Conway) did a round of the schooling hurdles. Taken at a steady pace, Benedictine jumped straighter than usual. Beau Star (Grindlay) went at a fast pace over four fences, jumping quickly and cleverly. St. Clara was given a round of halfpace work. The Grandcourt mare is coming to hand nicely. The Diacquenod—Vivo three-year-old is shaping up and showing improvement. He goes well in his work, galloping with plenty of determination. Silver Wings (Coyle) had Onewhetu (Feasey) as a companion in a half-mile gallop, and the latter confirmed his good effort of Thursday morning by finishing level with Silver Wings in 50s, which was the fastest of the morning.. After being led by Autumn Leaf (Feasey) for over three furlongs, Richfield (Fearn) finished on to beat his younger rival by a length at the end.
