HALL MARK’S GOOD WIN
CAULFIELD STAKES RACE THEO’S SECOND GUINEAS SUCCESS. POWER WON BY BROAD ARROW. By Telegraph—Press Assn.-Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 14. The weather was fine and there was a good attendance for the V.A.T.C. races at Caulfield. Raskassa who led all the way in the Orby Hurdles, has had two wins and a second, in the last three starts. Gay Lover, who led over the last three furlongs of the Debutant Stakes, for colts and geldings, has had two wins in two starts. He cost 450 guineas as a yearling. Wiseboy was troubled by his penalty. The New Zealanders Latharna and Teak showed promise. Matinee finished brilliantly in the Debutant Stakes for fillies. It was her second win in two starts. She cost 160 guineas as a yearling. The New Zealander Lady Promise had every chance but made a feeble finish. Overcoming the alleged Caulfield hoodoo, Hall Mark had a briliant win in the Caulfield Stakes. He has had only two wins at Caulfield but many defeats. His stakes earnings are now approximately £22,000. It was trainer Holt’s seventh win in this race and the fourth of the rider, Dempsey. Hall Mark is a likely runner in the Caulfield Cup. Previous stake winners to capture the big event include Eurythmic, High Syce, Manfred and Amounis. Theo, last at one stage, finished brilliantly in the Caulfield Guineas. Hyperion caused a sui-prise. Aztec improved on Randwick form. Titanium was knocked up as was Radiant Star, who made the pace. The winner was bred in New Zealand. Sir John ran a poor race. Broad Arrow enhanced his chance as a cup candidate in the Power Handicap. St. Valorey and Caterina finished strongly and Oriel, who had a poor run, did well to get fourth place. Upokoariki faded after being prominent early. Epigram received a. slight knock wfien galloping this morning, and has been relieved of his Toorak engagement. Sir Simper gave one of the best performances seen in years to win the Toorak Handicap. He was last after five furlongs and won in the last stride. It was his fourth successive victory. Closing Time tired after making the pace. Silver Ring was troubled by weight. Journal finished well.’ The winner will take a power of beating in the Caulfield Cup. Results are:— ORBY HURDLES.
