FEW BIG DIVIDENDS

PUBLIC PICKS WINNERS SOLARIUM’S CONVINCING WIN GAY BLONDE RUNS GOOD RACE. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Three first, three second and two third favourites were successful at the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting at Ellerslie yesterday, and in consequence the dividends Were not of large proportions, the best price being returned by Tray Bit, who was second in the Gordon Handicap. The Mitchelson Cup - was easily won by the lightweight Solarium, who scored in the most convincing fashion, leading over the last six furlongs and giving nothing a chance at the finish. Free Air Too Seasoned. Free Air was favourite for the Trial Hurdles and duly won. She was a long way back when Great Britain and Dark Marble, who fell at the second’ fence, had the field strung out early but was handy at the half-mile, where Chromadyne and Allegretto were in front, Great Britain having stopped badly along the back. Chromadyne swerved out on Free Air, who in turn checked Allegretto in the run from the last fence, but Free Air was too solid and beat him by a neck. Allegretto after changing his course to the inside finished very strongly to be a close third, and Catoma was fourth. Free Air was assisted by her seasoned condition, but Chromadyne and Allegretto shaped really well for beginners. tChromadyne might have just, won if he had not pecked on landing over the last fence. Gay Blonde Finishes Fast. Splendidly ridden by A. Tinker, the favourite Gay Blonde scored nicely in Great Northern Guineas. Gay Blonde followed Namakia, Sporting Blood and Burnish into the straight and- finished on to beat Namakia by half a length. Sporting Blood was a good third and Mother Superior was fourth ahead of Rerepai and Pin Money, both of whom became badly placed early. Namakia was responsible for the race, running the first five furlongs in 1.1, but she could not withstand Gay Blonde’s irresistible challenge at the finish. Sporting Blood had every chance, but Mother Superior received a check early although she afterwards had a good pun. The winner was turned out in fine condition by P, E. Pope, who was also successful with her full-sister Gay Sheila last year. Rereatu was the third successive favourite to win when he scored in the Shorts Handicap. Rippling Waters began smartest and led to the home turn where she was joined by Grand Sport, who had travelled fast on the outside with Solomon, Rereatu, King Nestor and Tradesman all handy. These horses all had chances with a furlong to go, and when Rippling Waters faded inside the distance, Rereatu shot through on the rails to win by a length from Grand Sport. Tradesman was a close third with British Columbia running on in fourth position ahead of Star Artist and Solomon. Rereatu won well, but Grand Sport would, have given him more trouble if he had jumped out ft little cleaner. Tradesman and British Columbia should both be improved by the race, especially the latter.

Solarium Wins Easily., The lightweight Solarium, second favourite to Spiral, made practically a onehorse race of the Mitchelson Cup, wresting the lead from Horowhenua six furlongs from home. He was never afterwards headed, and won with the greatest ease from Korokio, who followed him into the straight. Red Manfred came from a long , way back to get third ,a length and a half away, and Carfex was fourth, followed by Baroscope, Limbohm, Mungatoon and Spiral. Solarium is greatly improved, and in his present form will be very difficult to beat. He ran • the last half-mile in 47 l-ss, so that he set those behind him a very stiff task. Spiral was handily placed with half a mile to go but was badly checked, and that was the end of him. Carfex, Horowhenua and Baroscope all shaped creditably but Limbohm was never dangerous. Korokio attempted to go to the winner at the foot of the straight, but had no chance, although she beat the others comfortably. Miss Dazzle’s Pace on Flat.

The lightweight Miss Dazzle proved too good at the weights for the favourite, Flower Bag, in the Hunters’ Steeplechase. Miss Dazzle and Flower Bag were in close company in the lead over the last round, but Miss Dazzle's superior pace on the flat enabled her to dray? away at the finish and beat Flower Bag by two and a half lengths. Capella Abbey was a fair third, with the others badly beaten. : Miss Dazzle has had only two starts and has won both. She is small, but is very useful under a light weight. Hauwai fell at the fence near the five furlongs post when making a forward move, and may have been well in the picture. Galilee Wins Welcome Stakes.

. Symcony was a good favourite for the Welcome Stakes, but after showing brilliant speed she was outstayed at the finish by Galilee. Kotou was first out from Galilee, but Symcony soon streaked to the front and at the turn she was out three lengths from Galilee, with Che others strung out. Galilee challenged in the straight, and tackling Symcony at the distance went on to win by three parts of a length. Gay Sheik was a moderate third and Fleetwind fourth. Kotou fell when running third at the turn, but appeared to have little chance at the time.

Galilee might have won by a slightly larger margin if her rider had not dropped his hands just near the post.

Kelly’s Flying Finish. • It was with a fine finishing effort that the three-year-old Kelly got up to win the Gordon Handicap in the last stride from the outsider Tray Bit, who paid a fine price for second. Tray Bit made all the running and led into the straight from Scotland and Gipsy Moth, who were clear of Mungacre and Royal Appellant, with Kelly coming fast on the outside. It did not look as if Kelly would get up at the distance, but he stuck to his task with great determination to win by a head. Hikutaia finished on to get a close third just ahead of Scotland, Gipsy Moth, On Parade and Kurapae. Kelly registered a good performance as he was squeezed back at the five furlongs. Tray Bit stayed on surprisingly well, while Hikutaia. Scotland, Gipsy Moth and On Parade all ran solid races.

From End to End. Gay Marigold was a good favourite for the Flying Handicap, but she had to lower her colours to the third, fancy, Versant, who won practically from end to end. Chief Cook, Arch Ruler, Pomp and Gay Marigold were all handy to the winner at the turn, but he gave them no chance, winning very nicely from Gay Marigold, who finished gamely. Kiltowyn came home strongly on the outside to get third, and Pomp was fourth, followed by Karangapai, Chief Cook, Lord Vai and Prolyxo.

Versant won handsomely. Gay Marigold should be improved by the race, and so should Lord Vai. Pomp had

every chance but could make no impression in the straight. by the Christchurch Press Company, is an outstanding production. It contains an excellent range of reproductions featuring New Zealand life in its various phases. The scenic spots of New Zealand are prominently displayed in its excellently printed pages. The publication must provide a great attraction for New Zealanders and their friends abroad. The Christmas number of the Auckland Weekly News, which is regarded as one of the finest publications of its order in the world, combines artistic printing with a range of photographic subjects as varied as it is possible for New Zealand life and scenery to provide. Its pages abound with refreshing studies, which possess an appeal irresistible not only to those residents who know their country well, but also to thousands of people overseas. In stimulating this interest further the 1934 Christmas number will continue to act in the role of an ambassador of the Empire. The cover desfgn of this year’s publication is a departure from the last few numbers in that the reproduction of a New Zealand bird is replaced by a portrait of a charming New Zealand girl clasping a bunch of beautiful red pohutukawa blossoms. The supplement consists of nine colour plates of some of New Zealand’s native birds, the tui, longtailed cuckoo, morepork, saddleback, brown kaka, miromiro, male huia, white heron and pukeko, an excellent collection.
