SUCCESSFUL CRICKET YEAR

NEW PLYMOUTH OLD BOYS. ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES. A very successful season is reviewed in the annual report of the New Plymouth High School Old Boys’ Cricket Club to be presented at the meeting tonight. Again the club entered a team in each of the three grades, states the report, and although none was successful in the competitions, the season was enjoyable and the crickpt at times reached a high standard. The senior A team under the leadership of Mr. C. Lasli was runnerup to the Western Park team. In the lower grades the senior B team was runner-up and although the junior team did not attain a very high position on the championship ladder, it played sound cricket, and should develop into a strong combination. The club had several of its members chosen to play in representative fixtures and all acquitted themselves well. The representative players were:—Taranaki team, Hawke Cup matches, C. Lash, J. Kirwin, E. Christensen and J. H. Birch; senior B representative team. C. Sorenson, M. Hamilton, I. Wallace and N. Gilbert; junior representative team, S. Sisarich, G. Saunders and K. Hamilton. Mr. C. Lash was elected captain of the Taranaki team which won the Hawke Cup, and E. Christensen took all ten wickets at a cost of only 23 runs in a club match.

At the beginning of the season the club was in rather a serious position regarding junior players. It was found that there were available a total of 26 and certain difficulties arose in that a majority of these players would not have been available for the whole season. Again, it was estimated that it would cost approximately £ll to enter a second junior team and subscriptions would not have exceeded £5 10s. The club was not in the position to stand the loss. The committee’s decision not to enter a second junior team was justified when it was found that during the Christmas holidays difficulty was encountered in fielding the three original teams. The club is in a very strong financial position, continues th,e report,' thera being a cash credit of £l2 Is 2d and gear to the, value of £24 5s in hand. There are no outstanding liabilities. It was pleasing to witness the revival of the Umpires’ Association last season, more so from the club’s point of view, as the foundation work was promoted by an ex-secretary, Mr. W. J. Moorhead. To this association the club extended appreciation for the inestimable valuable work done fox cricket generally. Before his departure to commence business in the country one of the club’s most enthusiastic members, Mr. W. Morey, was presented with a token of appreciation by the junior team. The club is also unfortunate in losing the services of a senior B player, Mr. M." Hamilton, who after the close of the season was transferred to Auckland.
