VAST SMUGGLING SCHEME
ORGANISATION IN TURKEY. MILLIONS OF POUNDS INVOLVED. Constantinople, Aug. 29. A gigantic organisation, consisting chiefly of foreigners, which has long conducted smuggling on a large scale, has been unearthed by the Turkish police. Of the gang, which is believed to be over several hundred strong, 200 have already been arrested. The organisation is said to own no fewer than 23 steamers and to possess capital of several millions in Turkish pounds'. The leader is a certain Diogonow, a Persian by birth, but Russian by naturalisation. The business has chiefly consisted of smuggling into Turkey foreign currencies, vast quantities of which wereseized by the police in Dlogoncw's house. The company also made money by evading Customs duties where these were high enough to make it worth while. The total loss to the Turkish State is estimated at many millions of Turkish pounds.
