NEW CINEMA THEATRE

MODERN DESIGN INCORPORATED. BUILDING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. New Plymouth is to have a new picture theatre, an enterprise of Amalgamated Theatres (N.Z.) Ltd. It is expected the building will be completed within the next few months and that it will incorporate the latest features of theatre design. Of an estimated seating capacity of 800, the building will be constructed of reinforced concrete on the seaward side, of Devon Street just east of Gover Street, on a frontage of 60 feet with a full depth of 124 feet. The exterior will be finished in cement plaster and the interior with cement plaster and celotix for acoustic purposes, and a feature of the design will be indirect lighting providing diffused illumination with no individual lamp visible to members of the audience.

The plans of the building have already been completed by the promoters’ architect and a contract of construction let to a New Plymouth firm of builders. Amalgamated Theatres (N.Z.) Ltd. is a firm controlled by New Zealand executives and financed by New Zealand capital. It already controls a large number of theatres throughout the Dominion.
