HAWERA TRAINING TRACK
WORK ON SATURDAY MORNING. CARFEX SHOWS GOOD FORM. After the fine- weather throughout the week the tracks were in excellent order for work at Hawera on Saturday morning. Most of the galloping was done on the trial grass, on which the going was firm and fast. There was little difference In the state of the track before and after breakfast, although it might have been a trifle faster at the latter period. Leaving the half-mile peg from a flying start Eava (Vaughan) covered the first two furlongs in a shade under 25$ and the full distance in 50 3-ss. It was an attractive effort on the part of the Diacquenod filly. She showed great pace over the early stages. Carfex (Vaughan) completed his second round of light pacework by sprinting home the last half-mile in 50 l-ss. He worked impressively and is in great fettle.
Rose Ray (Vaughan) was again inclined to loaf to register 52’A S for half a mile. She works very lazily when unaccompanied. On the plough Colossal (Edgecombe) completed a couple of rounds of pacework by running home the last two furlongs in 26 l-ss. In a similar task Taitoru pulled hard throughout, occupying 26s for his final two furlongs. The remainder of the morning’s work was done after breakfast. On the trial grass Diagano (Robinson) and Aga Khan (Vaughan) were associated over five furlongs. Neither was asked to do the best and was not extended at the close of the work-out in 1.6 2-ss. Both strode along in great style, and had they not been restrained would probably have recorded smart time. Aga Khan showed no signs of lameness and apparently his pricked foot is not nearly as serious as was at first supposed. As he was off the scene for .a few days only his enforced idleness is not likely to have hampered his preparation to any extent. Autumn Leaf (Coyle) obtained an advantage at the start of a three-furlongs trial with Arouse (Vaughan) and led the latter until the straight. Arouse then made a forward move to finish on terms with his companion in 375. Arouse is now improving rapidly. Autumn Leaf went much better than on Thursday. Crennatown (Vaughan), Harvest Moon (Mills) and Richfield (Coyle) were sent half a mile together. From a straggling start in which Richfield received a couple of lengths the worst of matters Harvest Moon was the first to show out. Both Crennatown and Richfield finished more solidly for the former to be a neck to the good at the winning post, with Harvest Moon a length further back. The time, 51s, was only fair. Crennatown worked pleasingly, for he is seldom seen to advantage over short journeys. Harvest Moon had the outside running, but nevertheless did not gallop as well as usual.
Benedictine, Flower Bag, Silk Sox, Friesland, Ingenuity, March Alone, Nigger Minstrel filly, Colossus—Lady Eglentine gelding, Colossus—Miss Gallant gelding, Beau Star and The Tiger were apportioned piecework on the main plough. Gold Gleam (Simpson) unaccompanied traversed half a mile in 51 2-ss. He is far from thoroughly wound up yet.
Exquisite, Lowenberg, Link Divine, Fairfax and the Acre—Rapt youngster were exercised on the two-year-old Crack.
Light work on the inside plough the reverse way was allotted Sandlark, Green Linnet, Daniloff gelding and Mint Leaf gelding and filly.
