AUTOGIRO IN ANTARCTIC
ASCENT TO HEIGHT OF 7000 FEET. ADMIRAL BYRD RECOVERING. . By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Little America, Sept. 5. The first spring operation of the expedition was officially started on Tuesday, when a pilot took an autogiro to 7200 feet altitude to make atmosphere soundings. He descended when he found the propeller blades out of adjustment. The temperature was 38 degrees below zero. The pilot reported that the opening of the Bay of Whales was free of ice and that the Ross Sea was entirely open. A party started digging up the aeroplane buried by the first expedition. Reports from Bolling Base state that Rear-Admiral Byrd’s recovery continues, but the date of his removal is indefinite.
