FURNISHINGS OF CHATEAU
PETITION OF PARLIAMENT. THE MAKER SEEKS PAYMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 7. General support was given in the House of Representatives to-day to the report of the Public Petitions Committee which recommended to the Government for favourable consideration the petition of A. J. White, Christchurch, seeking payment for the furniture of the Chateau Tongariro. Members considered the Government was under a moral obligation to meet the debt. Mr. Coates indicated that the petition was submitted to the House at the instance of the Government. The amount involved was in the vicinity of £lO,OOO. The report was tabled. The manufacturing firm of A. J. White has not received full payment for the furnishings of the Chateau through the bankruptcy of the former occupant of the building and the subsequent taking over by the Government.
