The first round of match play in the Australian golf championship at the Royal Sydney links was played in perfect weather to-day and provided thrilling golf. The title-holder, Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) won at the 19th, beating Miss McKenzie (Woodend, Victoria). Miss Betty Gaisford (New Zealand) defeated Miss M. McLeod (Melbourne), 2 up and 1. Other results were:— Miss Joan Hammond (N.S.W.) beat Mrs. Clements (N.S.W.) 2 up and 1. Mrs. Tregloan (N.S.W.) beat Miss Millear (Victoria) 3 up and 2. Miss McLeish (N.S.W.) beat Miss Buckle (N.S.W.) 6 up and 5. Miss Lascelles (Melbourne) beat Mrs. T. McKay (N.S.W.) 2 up. Mrs. Russell (Melbourne) beat Miss L. Wray (N.S.W.) 3 up and 2. Mrs. Clive Robinson (N.S.W.) beat Miss Ebert (N.S.W.) at the 21st The draw for the quarter-finals tomorrow is:— Miss Hammond v. Miss Gaisford, Mrs. Russell v. Mrs. Tregloan, Miss McLeish v. Mrs. Robinson, Miss Lascelles v. Miss Kay. Miss Gaisford was two up at the conclusion of the first nine holes and was dormy two up at the 16th. The New Zealander pulled her tee shot to the side of the green at the short 17th and Miss McLeod went through. After playing two more strokes she gave the match to Miss Gaisford.

The much admired country player, Miss McKenzie, was at her best against Miss Kay. She began with a birdie three and turned for home two up. The New Zealander reduced her opponent’s lead to one at the 14th and three putts cost Miss McKenzie the 15th. Miss Kay won the next but the Victorian squared the match at the seventeenth, where Miss Kay failed to sink a two-foot putt, which stopped on the edge of the tin. The 18th was halved in bogey fours, Miss Kay winning the 19th with a four- to her opponent’s five.
