FALSE PRETENCE OFFENDER
“ONE OF WORST AT WELLINGTON”. CONVICTION OF YOUNG CHINESE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. “Although he is only 22 years of age he is one of the worst false pretences offenders we have in Wellington. He is becoming a menace to business people and to his own countrymen. Only recently he received a thrashing from some of his countrymen. Short sentences in the past for false pretences do not seem to have done any good.” This was how Detective-Sergeant Revell in the Magistrate’s Court described a Chinese, Arthur Wong, who pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining by false pretences 55 sacks of potatoes from H. Baldwin and Co., three travelling rugs from Kirkcaldie and Stains and various goods from the D.I.C. and from Hodsons Ltd. On one charge he was sentenced to a period of reformative detention not exceeding three years and on the others he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three years. The detective-sergeant said Wong obtained clothing and rugs to the value of £47 and £26 in cash from the sale or pawning of various other goods. Wong had nothing to say.
