HELPLESS IN STORM AT SEA

PLIGHT OF PASSENGER LAUNCH. TOWED BY TUG TO LYTTELTON. By Telegraph—Press Association, ' Qhristchurch, April 86. With, its engine broken down, a large passenger launch lap helpless just inside the heads at Lyttelton 'in a southwesterly storm for two and a-half hours last night, until picked up and towed to Lyttelton by the Harbour Board tug. The launch, owned by H. Grennell, carried seven passengers including a woman, bound for Port Levy. Petrol flares were burned in the first efforts to secure assistance and the steamer Wahine, on her way north, stopped alongside. On being assured that the launch would be able to ride safely until the tug arrived, the Wahine proceeded on her voyage. The tug picked up the launch at 9-20 p.m. in a heavy rain squall and took her in tow, Very heavy weather with the wind blowing at full gale force, was experienced on the return trip, No damage was done.
