ART UNIONS PROVIDE FUNDS

AUCKLAND RELIEF COMMITTEE. FALLING OFF IN DONATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, April 26. The Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committee, during the financial year ended March 31, received £20,797 and spent £16,531. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Hutchison) said in his report to the annual meeting to-day that £7759 of the receipts were derived from art union allocations. Direct donations had fallen off considerably and but . for the art union allocations the committee would have been compelled to cease allocations. He sympathised with the contention that the committee’s work interfered with the retailers’ business, but there was no means of overcoming that difficulty. Reports from affiliated •committees indicated’ that, while they would not say conditions were getting worse, they hesitated to say that they were improving. So it seemed that the coming winter would be. much the seme as last.
