MANGATOKI DISTRICT NEWS

MEETING OF BASKETBALL CLUB. ■ The Mangatoki Ladies’ Basketball Club held its annual meeting last week. Mrs. S. Morgan was elected president, Miss Elsie Gatenby declined to accept nomination as secretary for the ensuing year, and Miss Rita Nicholas was elected secretary and treasurer, with Miss Mollie Nicholas assistant secretary. All members present were elected a committee. The report stated the past year had been very satisfactory, the balance-sheet showing a credit of over -£3, The team had made, a good showing, reaching the final for the junior championship but were beaten by a more experienced team. Notwithstanding the loss of several good players, the membership had been increased and the prospects for the season were bright. It was decided to affiliate with the Taranaki Basketball Association and to enter for the junior competition. A working-bee was arranged to mark out and prepare the playing area. Application for the school ground was arranged for. The retiring secretary was accorded a vote of thanks. Personal and , General. The local school was closed on Monday and Tuesday to enable the teaching staff to attend the refresher training class in Eltham. Mrs. A. E. Mahon has returned from the South Island, after attending the jubilee celebrations of the Temuka school. Miss M. Bowden, assistant at the local school, has been appointed to a position at Rakaia school, and takes up her duties there after the end of the next term holidays. Hockey. At an informal meeting of the Mangatoki club it was stated a playing area was under offer for this season if a satisfactory rental could be arranged. It is still hoped to field a team for the junior men’s championship, but the question of which division to play in was deferred for consideration after the ground was inspected.
