MEMORIAL TO WAKEFIELD
CAIRN FOR NELSON’S FOUNDER ERECTION BY RICHMOND, RESIDEN By Telegraph— Press Association. Nelson, April 2. What is believed to be the first and only public memorial to any member of the Wakefield family was unveiled yesterday on the Pa Hill, Riwaka, to the memory of Captain Arthur Wakefield, founder of the Nelson settlement and the first Riwaka settler. The memorial takes the form of an impressive cairn. erected solely by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pattie, formerly of Riwaka, but now of Richmond. The unveiling ceremony, at Mr. Pattie’s request, was performed by Mr. K. J. Holyoake, M.P., a descendant of the pioneer settlers.
Mr. Pattie has done a,great deal to place on record the trials tribulations, heroism and determination of the first settlers whom he knew as a youth and now, in his 80th year, he was determined that he would leave behind some definite memorial to Wakefield and the first settlers.
