ELLERSLIE MEETING

FINE FIELD FOR THE EASTER KILTOWYN AND GAY SHEILA. REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS. (By “Hurry On.”) The A.R.C. Easter meeting, which will open to-day at Ellerslie, is one of the most important fixtures in the Dominion’s racing year. In addition to the main attraction, the Easter Handicap, the two classic events, the Oaks and the Champagne Stakes, add greatly to the interest in the gathering. GREAT NORTHERN OAKS. Of £4OO. One mile and a-half. Gay Sheila S 10 Star Artist 8 10 Rust S 10 Maid of the Palm Queen 810 Air 810 Mellsande 810 Golden Halo 810 Coronis 8 10 With Gay Sheila an almost certain absentee, this event appears to be at the mercy of Golden Hair, whose brilliant win in the Thompson Handicap demonstrated that she is at the top of her form. Others most fancied may be from Palm Queen, who stays on well, and Rust, who ran a fine race at Awapuni. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.

good horse, but he is giving away a lot of weight. King March has raced consistently lately and finished fast on the second day at Te Rapa. With L. J. Ellis in the saddle he is sure to carry good money. Royal Artist is back in form, while Knight of Australia’s good showings at Te Aroha and Te-Rapa point to his showing up prominently. Epigram is at his best on this course, while Baroscope, King’s Archer and Gay Broney all have chances. The favourites may be King March, Knight of Australia and Royal Artist. BRIGHTON HURDLE RACE. Of £4OO. Two miles.

Though Prince of Orange is. sure to have benefited as a . result of his recent racing, his showings have not been convincing. Biform has .had some racing and he is a useful sort. Mia Stella is good though not very reliable. Wee Pat and Callamart are a likely pair, who usually perform well on this course. Callamart’s second at Te Rapa .showed that he was back in form. Thespis, who has been galloping in good style, seems the best of the others. Most support may come for Callamart, Thespis and Wee Pat.

viewed. Recent track work has show that Kiltowyn, Star Artist and Jonathan are in great fettle, while Red Manfred, Gay Sheila, Impasto, Takakua, Pomp, Golden Chart and Sea Fox are all likely to run prominently. In a great betting race the main fancies may be Kiltowyn, Gay Sheila and Sta” Artist. G.N. CHAMPAGNE STAKES. Of £6OO. Seven furlongs. Pin Money 8 10 Burnish 8 5 Royal Llmulus 8 5 Appellant R 10 Gay Sister 8 5 Gay Blonde 8 5 This will be a small field, with the two fillies Burnish and Gay Blonde monopolising attention. In the Foal Stakes on Boxing Day Gay Blonde accounted for her riVal but Burnish j/as not herself that day. Both have won since then but Burnish appears to represent a little better class than Gay Blonde and may count more admirers.

Riotous is such a proficient jumper that despite the fact that the country will be strange to him he is likely to have a big following. If reserved for this event Biform would be entitled to a lot of respect, while Brown Abbey is the type to make good over fhe big fences. Patutahi and Zane Grey know the country. The public may select Riotous, Biform and Zane Grey.

ONSLOW STAKES. Of £275. Six furlongs.

Coronilla 8 6 Red Flame 7 fl Lady Kyra 7 10 Capris 7 0 Waitaka 7 0

The withdrawal of Morbury reduces the field to five runners. Coronilla is brilliant but the six furlongs journey may find her out. The New Plymouth filly Lady Kyra is a plain looking sort but she sticks on and is game. Waitaka and Red Flame ar only moderates, but Capris showed plenty of promise at Pukekohe. The chances of Lady Kyra and Coronilla may be most favoured. EDEN HANDICAP. Of £275. One mile.

This presents punters with a problem. Werohia and D’Artagnan would both be better suited by a longer distance, but King Musk, Versant and Senior can all run a good mile. Hunting Bag’s fine effort in the Douro Cup i> not likely to be forgotten and he won on this course during the summer carnival. Royal Dash, Mungacre, Expectancy and Coronis are all likely but the best backed may be Hunting Bag, Senior and King Musk,
