USEFUL TROTTING FIELDS

FIRST DAY’S HAW ERA EVENTS MANY VISITING HORSES ENGAGED. STRONG AUCKLAND BRIGADE. (Special to News.) The annual meeting of the Hawera Trotting Club will open to-day and with useful fields of good calibre there is a promise of keen and spectacular racing. The fact that there is representation from all parts of New Zealand, including several South Island and Auckland horses, shows that the Hawera Easter carnival has not lost its popularity with owners and trainers. While fields are not as large in more recent years, it should not effect the result of the racing from the public standpoint. Big trotting fields, it has been conclusively proved, do not produce the best racing results or assist in advancing the speculative value of the events. With well balanced fields such as are carded to-day public interest will be fully maintained and all through the card the number of horses with recent good form in their favour will tend to create a wider range of selection in each contest.* .
