FULL QUOTAS DEMANDED
BRITISH CABINET’S ACTION REVISION BY FRANCE SOUGHT SAME TERMS AS AMERICA NEGOTIATIONS FOR TREATY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 7.5 p.m. London, Jan. 25. Cabinet has taken swift action to secure a revision of the French quotas upon British imports, states the Daily Telegraph. Cabinet has instructed Lord Tyrrell to demand treatment equal to that given to the United States, whose quota has been restored to 100 per cent, following a protest from Washington. While France discriminates against Britain the latter will not negotiate the Anglo-French commercial treaty for which the French Government is most anxious, continues the Telegraph. British officials in Whitehall decline to admit that France is entitled to penalise British goods in order to secure the bargaining weapon. FRENCH FIRMNESS ON QUOTAS. NO PROSPECT OF MODIFICATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright London, Jan. 24. Mr. S. M. Bruce’s inquiries into the French restrictions, which included a consultation with the commercial department of the British Embassy in Paris, indicate that there is no present prospect of a modification. The firmness of the French attitude is based largely on the unfavourable balance of trade with Australia.
