OHURA DISTRICT NEWS

BASKETBALL CLUB’S DANCE. A dance to conclude the season was held by the Ohura Old Girls’ Basketball Club. Miss L. Borthwick was mistress of ceremonies. The town hall was decorated with the team’s colours, red and black. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss G. Howie and Mr. L. Galloway. Mrs. Wagstaffe’s ‘ orchestra provided the music.

The Matiere Golf Club played a match against the Ohura club on the Ohura links during the week-end. The course was in good order and 'fine weather prevailed. Eight four-ball matches were played. The Ohura team won seven matches of the eight and the remaining match was halved. Following are the results, Matiere players mentioned first:— G. Baker and I. Turner lost to R. S. Milter and W. MacClure, 1 up; G. Kelly and A. Ross lost to L. Galloway and W. K. Williams, 4 up and 2; Goldring and Sowry lost to Denis Budd and A. Wakeford, 5 up and 4; H. Turner and H. Gibson lost to W. L. Wagstaff and D. P. Deere, 2 up; Stoddart and Baunton lost to J. Clark and P. Dons, 3 up and 2; Mrs. Stoddard and Miss Granville lost to Mrs. Deere and Miss Henderson, 4 up and 3; Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. M. Wiliams and Miss Dickens all square; Mrs. Gibson and Miss Kelly lost to Mrs. Mackay and Miss Butcher, 3 up and 2. Ohura Cricket Club.

At the annual meeting of the Ohura Cricket Club Mr. S. Moray presided. Although the balance-sheet showed a small deficit, the report stated, the club had a successful season from a playing point of view. Indications pointed to the coming season being a bright one, and there were good prospects for Ohura being able to field two teams this season. The elections of officers resulted:—President, Mr. Stuart Moray; secretary, Mr. D. Newman; auditor, Mr. J. MacLenaghan; committee, Messrs J. Koorey, H. Hunt, G. Fitzpatrick, W. G. Clarke, R. Milne, W. MacClure, D. Budd and R. Milne; club captain, Mr. J. Cox; selectors, Messrs D. Budd and E. Fitzpatrick; delegates, Messrs D. Newman, W. G. Clarke and W. MacClure. It was decided to hold a match on October 8, Married v. Single. A vote of appreciation of Mr. Cox’s services to the club was put on record. Mr. Cox has been secretary of one club for three years.

Methodist Social Evening. The Methodist Social Committee organised a party to visit the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall on Wednesday evening. A good number was present and a happy evening was spent with games and competitions. Recitations were given by Mrs. Brookes and Miss J- Ingles. Supper was served by ladies of the committee. Mr. Woodhouse proposed a vote of thanks to the host and hostess and the ladies who had assisted. Personal.

Mrs. E. Currie and Miss Ailsa Currie have left for Papakura. Mrs. Broad, Taumarunui, who was one of the judges at the flower show, is the guest of Mrs. F. Brown. Mrs. Koorey and Miss Rose Koorey have returned after a prolonged visit to New Plymouth.
