HOCKEY TEAM ENTERTAINED
WAIPA PLAYERS AT WAITARA. The Waipa hockey team that won the Nordon Cup from Taranaki yesterday at Waitara motored from Waikato on Wednesday. Yesterday morning was spent in a tour of Waitara, including an hi- , spection of Borthwick’s freezing works. Later the players were entertained at morning tea at the kiosk on the west beach, and an official was given* Mr. J. R. Bennett, president of the Waitara Hockey Club,, welcomed the team on behalf of the club,- and a welcome on behalf of the Mayor' and citizens of Waitara was expressed by mr. E. A. George. Mr. George apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr. J. Hine, and hoped that the team would enjoy its visit, to Waitara. Mr. W. Middleton, president of the Waitara Chamber of Commerce, Mr. T. Taylor, president of the Seaside Society, and Mr. L. Byron, a member of the management committee of the Taranaki Hockey Association, also spoke. In reply Mr. C. S. Davis, manager of the Waipa team, thanked the speakers for their welcome and good wishes. He said the players always looked forward to the match with Taranaki, and were grateful for the splendid manner m which they were being treated. Mr. L. Spiers, captain of Waipa, heartily seconded Mr. Davis’ remarks. Mr. Watts, one of the referees and president of the Auckland Hockey Association, Mr. L. Page, captain of Taranaki, and Mr. W. Wright, on behalf of Borthwick and Sons, also spoke. \ . THE TEAMS ENTERTAINED. In the evening the Waipa players were the guests of the Taranaki Hockey Association at a dinner in the Masonic Hotel. Mr. H. C. Johnson, president of the association, presided, and a short toast list was honoured. . *Mr. Johnson said the game with Waipa was always enjoyable, and Taranaki ha looked forward to the visit this J car. He congratulated Waipa on the game played. The Nordon Cup had been intended for the' encouragement of the minor associations and- Waipa had fully earned its victory. He hoped Waipa would hold the cup long enough tor Taranaki to challenge next y ear \ "e--proposed the toast of the Waipa team and association. ■ _ In reply Mr. Davis thanked the laranaki management for its hospitality, and promised the representatives a good game should Waipa be challenged next year. Later the teams were the guests or the Waitara Hockey Club at a dance in the Clifton Hall. Thp function proved most popular, and a large crowd danced to music played by McNeills orchestra. Messrs. L.
