THEFT FROM GOLF HOUSE

OFFENDER BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.. ELTHAM LOSS CLEARED UP. In March last' two Eltham golfers, Messrs. Leo Quin and J. D, McKay, suffered a loss of personal effects from the club house, the former missing an- overcoat and the latter a pair of golf shoes. The loss was cleared up recently, with the arrest at Morrinsville of Hector James McDonald, alias Heywood, on a charge of being a rouge and a vagabond. In his possession was found a motor driver’s license, the name of which had been altered from “Quin” to “Me-. Donald.” Acting on this clue the police communicated with Contable Townsend at Eltham and the loss of the coat and shoes was brought to light. The driver’s license had been left in the coat pocket and with this association of facts McDonald was accused of the theft of the coat and shoes.

To this charge he admitted his guilt at the Morrinsville police court recently and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each charge,, the sentences to be cumulative. McDonald was “swagging” his way through Eltham and slept one night at the golf house. He appropriated the articles and wore them. Both coat and shoes were much the worse for wear after four months on the road.
