NOTED HORTICULTURIST
DEATH OF MR. D. A. HAY. - Mr. David A. Hay, one of the best known horticulturists of the Dominion, died at his residence, Remuera, Auckland, on. July 4 in his eightieth year. He Was the only son of the late Mr. David Hay, who arrived in New Zealand in 1854, and established the business of D. Hay and Son, nurserymen. That firm was one of the leading importers of new fruits and flowers for many years. Mr. Hay was a managing-partner for 43 years and retired in 1926. He was a foundation member, a vicepresident and a member of the examining board of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and the holder of a diploma. He was a past-president ana foundation member of the Horticultural Trades Association, of which he was a life member. 'He was a life member of the Auckland Horticultural Society, a leading judge at shows, and a recognised authority on the nomenclature of plants. He was for 50 years a vestryman of Si. Mary's Cathedral. In early life he was a keen volunteer and an expert marksman, and a member of the team that won the Gordon Challenge Gup. Mr. Hay’s marriage to Miss Elizabeth Emma Collins, daughter of the late Mr. S. Y. Collins, Auckland, took place m 1885, and he is survived by his widow, four daughters—Miss Hay, Mrs. Nelson Mitchell, Mrs. Lisle Aiderton. Mrs. F ._ A. Abbot— and a son, Mr. Douglas A. Hay. There are four grandchildren.
