MATIERE SMOKE CONCERT

- FORTY RETURNED SOLDIERS. : The first annual smoke concert of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Matiere hall on Saturday. There was a roll call of forty, including seven South African veterans. Visiting Diggers came from Ohura, Okahukura and Taumarunui. The toast list was: The King, the chairman (Mr. Lodder); Fallen Comrades (chairman); Army and Navy (Mr. A. Lodder —Mr. A. L. Ross); R.S.A. (Mr. H. Stoddart—Mr. W. Sandison); Mounted Rifle Brigade (Mr. A. Lodder—Mr. V/. I Sandison); Nurses (Mr. T. Kelly—Mr. ;G. Goldring); South African Veterans (Mr. W. Taylor—Messrs. H. Wilson and A. L. Ross). Items were given by Messrs. J. Rees, W. Sandison,. F. Pleasant, R. B. Owen, R. W- Alanson, A. J. Taylor and G. Golding... Numerous.. other toasts were drunk and many army songs and yarns were resurrected as the proceedings progressed.
