Entries .at the Addington market today were of normal size and prices showed little change in the sheep section, except for breeding ewes, which were better, and light fat lambs, which were Cheaper. Good beef was in keener demand. Store sheep: Good ewes were Is to 2s a head better than the preceding week, adult wethers and store wethers also being in good demand, without any change in values. OTAGO CATTLE AND SHEEP LATE RATES RULE AT BURNSIDE. WETHERS UP BY A SHILLING. Dunedin, July 12. A full yarding of 270 head of fat cattle, mainly of excellent quality, was offered at Bumside to-day. Butchers bid freely at full late rates for cows and heifers, but heavy prime bullocks, of which there was a surplus, showed a drop of 15s to £1 per head. Lightweight bullocks sold well in the early-part of -the sale, but fell away as buyers filled their requirements. The top price of £l2 7s 6d was . again made for a consignment from Central Otago. Extra prime heavy bul- ’ locks sold to £l2 7s 6d; prime heavy, . £8 10s to £lO 10s; medium, £6 10s to ' £8; light, £5 to £6. Best heifers sold L to £8 2s 6d; light and medium, £4 to £6. Best cows sold to £7; others to £5.

A yarding of 2700 sheep proved too many for butchers’ requirements. Wethers were again in short supply, but those penned were of better quality than usual. The bulk of the ewes were well finished, and included a good number of prime heavy sorts. From the start, medium and lightweight ewes showed a drop of Is 6d to 2s. Best ewes were in keen demand at last week’s rates. Wethers showed a rise of Is per head, and for this class values were steady throughout. At the closing stages values for ewes, particularly medium and lightweights, dropped considerably. Extra prime heavy wethers sold to 27s 6d; prime heavy, 20s to 225; medium, 17s to 19s; light, 15s to 16s; extra prime heavy ewes to 235; prime heavy, 14s to 18s; medium, Ils to 13s: light, 7s to 9s 6d. Although only 200 lambs were offered there was little competition, except for pens showing quality. Bidding was confined to the butchers, who paid to 20s for prime heavy iambs. Light and unfinished sorts were unsaleable, except to graziers. In the store cattle section there was an average yarding. Threc-year-old steers, of which there were only a few pens, showed a decline of fully 10s per head.

For dairy cows the market was erratic. With the exception of one cow, which realised £8 2s 6d, nothing of outstanding quality was offered. The yarding of fat pigs numbered 87, and owing to the short entry there was A distinct firming. Best baconers sold

to £3 10s, and porkers up to £2 ss. These prices showed a rise of fully 8s per head on recent rates. A short yarding of sto're pigs sold firmly at late rates. Good suckers realised up to 10s, and large stores to 24s per head. BEEF DEMAND AT WESTFIELD STEERS IN SHORT SUPPLY. , ADVANCE IN COWS AND HEIFERS.. Auckland, July 12. There was a keen- demand for beef cattle at Westfield to-day. Ox beef was in rather short supply, and values improved by about Is per 1001 b. Cow and heifer beef also advanced in pffce. Extra choice ox sold to 19s per 1001 b; choice and prime ox, 16s to 18s; secondary and plain, 14s to 15s; prime young cow and heifer, 14s to 17s; ordinary, cow, 10s to 12s 6d. Extra heavy prime steers made £8 7s 6d to £9 2s 6d;< heavy prime steers, £7 10s to £8; lighter prime, £6 7s 6d to £7 ss; light prime, £5 IQs-to £6 2s 6d; small and unfinished, £4 5s 6d to £4 17s Gd; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £5 5s to £5 12s 6d; heavy prime, £4 7s 6d to £5; lighter prime, £3 15s to £4 2s 6d; other killable cows, £1 17s 6d to £3 12s 6d. Sheep were yarded in less than average numbers. The demand unproved and values for wethers were very firm at late rates. Ewes appreciated by about 2s a head. The Gear Meat Company announces that it holds £319,225 at face value Government stock free from income tax.. The recent reduction in interest on it from 4J to 3j per cent, renders this large holding of less, value to the company s annual finance. The directors have resolved to propose to shareholders the distribution in proportion to each holding of £230,000 of the 3J per cent, stock, assumed for the purpose to be of exact face value.
