PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. Messrs Newton Hudson and Jim Gardner junior have returned after spending three weeks in touring the North Island by motor-car. The party had some exciting experiences during the tour, including a capsize on a bridge near Hamilton and difficulties in fording rivers in the Gisborne district. The weather during the three weeks with the exception of two days was fine. The unemployment register at Kaponga at present contains the names of 24'men, three being single men, 15 married men with up to two children and six married men with three or more children. Applications for boots from workers who have been registered 26 weeks are being received and when all are in application will be made to headquarters for the boots. Bowlers’ Dance.
There was a good attendance at the Kaponga Bowling Clubs’ dance in the Parish Hall on Thursday. Music was played by Jack Hooker’s Orchestra, with extras by Miss V. Feaver. Messrs. W. Cran and W. Taylor were masters of ceremonies and supper arrangement were under the supervision of Mesdames N. Gardner and J. Dawson. ,
The novelty dances resulted: Monte Carlo, Miss H. Guy and Mr. H. Hickey; statuette, Mrs. J. Odonoghue and Mr. T. Reid; spot waltz, Miss M. Kehely and Mr. W. Gardiner. After supper Mr. W. G. Cran, vice-president of the club, presented the silver cups donated by Mr. H. T. Mellow (Mahoe) to the winners, Messrs J. Dawson and S. Palmer. In his reply Mr. J. Dawson (president) thanked Mrs. J. Pascoe for donating a cushion which had been the subject of competition during the evening, the winner being Mr. H. J. Syme. St. Mark’s Vestry.
The first meeting of the new St. Mark’s Vestry was held on Friday night the vicar (the Rev. A. J. Famell) presiding. The following members were present: Messrs A. V. Tait, W. J. A. Farnell, J. W. H. Gardiner, C. N. Gordge, A. H. Burt, R. A. Grace, L. A. Wells, F. W. Fallows, W. A. O’Neill and E. S. Death. In extending a welcome to the two new members (Messrs Gardiner and O’Neill) the vicar said it was the first occasion for some years that he had seen a full meeting of the vestry and expressed pleasure at being able to preside over a full meeting. The question of erecting a suitable memorial to the late Mr. Allan Grace was discussed and it was decided to keep the matter in view and to give parishioners an early opportunity of contributing on a small scale toward the cost df a small tablet.
It was also decided to hold a working bee, when the weather was favourable, for the purpose of repairing the fences and generally tidying the church precincts. School Sports. The second round of the South Taranaki schools Rugby championship was commenced on Friday afternoon, when Kaponga school team went to Kapuni and was defeated by a team from that school by 6 to 3 in a hard-fought game. Kaponga’s score was obtained by Behl, who played like a Trojan and well merited his being selected for the school representatives. • Kapuni’s score comprised a try from a scrummage on the | line and a goal from a free kick. Mr. (Charles Paterson was the referee. I The Kaponga girls’ combined basketI ball team visited Kapuni on Friday to
play a friendly match with the Kapuni girls. The score was Kaponga 15, Kapuni nil. Referees were Miss Buckeridge and Miss Guppy.
