ON TARANAKI TRACKS

FINAL TRIAL GALLOPS LADY QUEX’S GOOD FIVE. GIBRALTAR SHOWS IMPROVEMENT. Tha final trials of. the horses engaged at file Egmont' meeting to-day took place yesterday morning on heavy tracks, fl-parly all acquitted themselves well and the racing should prove interesting. At New Plymouth the galloping took place on the course proper with the flags well out. The going , was heavy though better than might have been expected after the heavy rain. Royal Bengal comfortably accounted for Arvada at the conclusion of five furlongs in Im 7 l-ss. Royal Bengal did his task in good style but Arvada did not impress. Amyril went once round at half pace, sprinting down the straight. Lucky Alice did a similar task, sprinting the last two furlongs in 281 s. She hit out very freely considering the going. Lady Quex and Cereal hopped off practically on terms at the five furlongs but the mare was well clear after going two furlongs. She was two lengths in front as they turned into the straight. but Cereal, finishing on well, was within a length of her at the end. They ran the first two in 25s and the full distance in Im 6 3-ss. Lady Quex looked and moved better than on Saturday and Cereal was anything but disgraced. , Merry Way and Glowlight reeled off half a mile in good style in 53 3-5 s and were both going very strongly at the finish. Sferry Way again worked impressively. The tracks were very heavy at Hawera. All fast work was’ done , on the outside of the course proper and very slow times were returned for most of the work-outs. Good efforts were credited to Miss Cavendish and Green Linnet on the fiat and Consent over hurdles. La Crown (W. E. Pine) reeled off five furlongs in hn 10 2-ss. . Tentcall (W. E t Pine) was too good for Icier (Feasey) over half a mile in 575. Tentcall was not, extended but the time was by no means good. Icier did not impress'. ■ ■ Aga Khan (J. M. Pine) was not extended to run five furlongs in lm 13s. Gibraltar (Sheild) pleased when he defeated Attentive (Feasey) over seven furlongs in lm 401 s. Gibraltar had some-/ thing in hand at. the finish. Once.again Attentive showed that he has no liking for a holding track. Consent (McHugh) and High Faintin' (Grindley) were sent a round over the schooling hurdles. The pace was on from the start and Consent showed too much speed for the Grandcourt gelding to be a couple of lengths in front at the last fence. Consent gave a. good exhibition of jumping and if he goes like that to-day should lead the field a merry dance over the early part. The fast pace appeared to bustle High Falutin’, who was inclined to rap his fences. Carfex (Vaughan) ran home the last three furlongs of a round of pacework in 42js. March Alone (Sheild) appeared to be going slightly better than Chief Line (Feasey) at the end of seven furlongs in lm 39Js. . The going did not appear to trouble either horse and both hit out boldly. • Chief Link (J. M. Pine) strode along over a mile working gallop. . Awaken (Vaughan) was nearer at the finish than at any other part of a five furlong sprint with Grefen Linnet (Feasey), occupying lm 9 l-ss. Green Linnet moved with her usual dash and Awaken did not appear likely to catch her at any part. Alone Lapstone (W. E. Pine) traversed five furlongs in lm Ils. Having her first gallop since -Easter Miss Cavendish (Coyle) began more quickly than Davistock (W. E. Pine) and vzas always in front of her companion in the smart time of 54jjs. Miss Cavendish has only to go like this in her race to-day to run prominently.. Galloping for the morning was concluded when Little Doubt (W. E. Pine) ran five furlongs alone in lm 10s. Late comers to the track in Okopua (Bowden) and Fine Acre (Mcßrearty) were schooled over the steeplechase fences. Both jumped well and are in excellent condition for to-day. King Win caused a stir during training operations when he got away from his attendant in the saddling paddock and bolted riderless around the course proper. After considerable trouble he was caught and appeared none the worse for his escapade. Horses expected at Hawera to run well to-day are:— Tongahoe Hurdles: Ganpat, Consent. Telegraph Hack: Cereal, Merry Way. Egmont Steeples: Okopua, Copey. . Flying Handicap: British Columbia, The Tiger. Hack Scurry: Instalment, Miss Cavendish. . .

McCrae Handicap: Carfex, Seatown. Tawhiti Hack: Fairway, March Alone. All slow work was done on the two-year-old track. Included in those who were exercised on this track were Copey, Haunui, Diagano, Lalla Quex, Jen, Hard Gold and Slippery. A. McLeod: Lady Quex, Amyril. L. George: Cereal.
