EGMONT OPENS TO-DAY

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED OKOPUA’S BRIGHT PROSPECTS. ,SARFEX WILL BE FANCIED. 7 (By "Hurry On.*) Great interest is being evinced in the winter meeting of the Egmont Racing Club, which opens at Hawera to-day. Good fields will contest both jumping events, which look certain to be productive of splendid contests. The flat events have also filled well and the sporting public should be provided with a splendid day’s racing. The day will commence at 11.45 a.m. teith the

The top-weight Callamart is a proved hurdler but-the distance may not be far enough for her, and she will probably find some of the others too speedy. High Faintin’, made a promising debut at Marton and should do better here. Chief Link has all the qualifications to make good at the new game and is surb to be well supported. Ganpat, who won at Stratford, is another very promising beginner. The popular fancies may be CHIEF LINK HIGH FALUnN* GANPAT.

The two-top weights Cereal and Merry Way are sure to dominate the betting here, and they are two hacks well above the average. Cereal has’ been performing consistently under solid weights throughout the season and it is doubtful if he has ever been better than at present. Merry Way has made solid improvement during the last six vreeks and is a much better filly than when she won a double at Stratford. Both worked exceptionally well at New Plymouth yesterday morning. • Slippery,- Lapstone and La Crown should all serve to make the race interesting, but it is not likely that many will look past MERRY WAY and CEREAL.

Copey would have to improve on his showings at Paerda if he is* to beat Okopua here, as the son of Chief Ruler is a most promising young ’chaser who showed by his fine second to the more season Callamart at Marton that he is coming to his best. Jayson is another who looks like being useful over the big fences. Hard Gold and Fine Acre are both good sorts when, in form, and the former has had three or four outings -on the flat which should have sharpened, him up considerably. Those Ukely-fo find most favour are OKOPUA COPEY. HARD GOLD.

Lady Quex galloped well yesterday morning, but on Stratford form All Humbug should again finish in front of ■her. Awaken has no recent form but Royal Bengal and British Columbia are a fit pair with good form to their credit. Arvada, who won at Marton, and The Tiger look the best of those lower down. Good support will be given ROYAL BENGAL BRITISH COLUMBIA LADY QUEX. HACK SCURRY.

Merry Way can be regarded as an unlikely starter in this event. Instalment is a fit horse and his form in the open sprints at Avondale will not be overlooked. Miss Cavendish is very speedy over this distance and is more solid than she was in the spring. If reserved for this La Crown should account for King Peg and Forceful, as there was a lot of merit in her second at Stratford. Diagano, Sub-Station and Amyril should do best among the lightweights. Three who should come in for solid support are INSTALMENT MISS CAVENDISH

Though this field is small the race should be productive of a very interesting contest. Seatown has always proved himself a great horse under winter conditions, and though he failed at Ellerslie he suffered no ill effects as the result of his efforts. Aga Khan has been racing consistently lately but it is doubtful Whether he- can give weight to Carfex, who beat him decisevely at Ellerslie, especially as this three-year-old is improving all the time. Gibraltar will appreciate the sting out of the ground and should make an improved showing. Alloy ran a good race the second day at Avondale. March Alone will have to do better than he has ever done before to have a winning chance. Most backing will probably come for CARFEX

Fairway and King Win are good hacks who should run solid races, but they may find their weight too big. Attentive usually goes well when fresh, and on Opunake running should be able to account for Davistock. Illuminate has always been finishing very strongly over six furlongs and he appreciates the soft going. Tentcall, who is remarkably well treated by the handicapper, would appear to hold the lightweights very safe, though Glowlight may show up. The favourites may be ILLUMINATE TENTCALL FAIRWAY. . ■
