ROTARY CLUB EFFORTS
ENDEAVOURS TO RAISE MONEY. ASSISTING RELIEF OF DISTRESS. The projects of the New Plymouth Rotary Club for raising money for the relief of distress in the town were advanced yesterday when the assistance of members’ wives, some of whom - were present at the luncheon, was sought. The ladies present agreed to help and Mrs. T. C. List was appointed convener of the ladies’ committee. The ladies were warmly welcomed by Rotarian T. C. List, president of the club, who expressed the hope that they would be able to attend other luncheons in the future.' “Service Before Self” was the Rotary principle, and the club had recently decided to assist in the relief of distress caused by unemployment. There was real need and the club had agreed to do what it could. First of all £lOO had been guaranteed towards relief, but he hoped that amount would be' but a fraction of the total raised by the endeavours of the club.
Briefly outlining the plans of the club for raising money Rotarian List said the Palmerston North Amateur Operatic Society was to stage "Interference” at New Plymouth, and promises had been received that almost all expenses in connection with the show would be rebated. A four-day exhibition of antiques and objects of interest was to follow, and the assistance of' the ladies would be required in that connection. Exhibition arrangements were outlined by Rotarian H. W. Insull. He said helpers would be wanted at St. Mary’s hall on Monday, June 26, when the unpacking and staging of the exhibits would require supervision. It was hoped to. obtain a large collection of articles, of historical, romantic and sentimental value. Antiques of any description would be welcomed, including furniture, gold, silver, brass, copper or pewter ware, musical instrumentals, jewellery, pictures and prints, toys, clothes and such articles. The exhibition could be opened on the four succeeding days, afternoon tea, musical programmes and mannequin parades being among suggestions received. The first mannequin parade could show fashions from the year 1840 and the second one modem dresses. Different forms of entertainment would be staged and school children could view the exhibits in relays during the mornings. It was hoped to obtain articles of interest from the Governor-General. It was suggested that a ladies’ committee be appointed to arrange for the mannequin parades, musical programmes and the conduct of the children round the exhibition. An appeal for the loan of articles of interest was made by Rotarian A. M. Purser. Every care would be taken as it was intended to insure the articles against fire and burglary and special supervision was to be arranged. Expert packers would be engaged. Rotarian List announced that 15 members of the Palmerston North Operatic Society were being billetted by members of the club, and it was reported that accommodation was now required for only a few.
