TANGARAKAU GORGE

METAL NOT USED. The recent wet weather is making it difficult for traffic through the Tangarakau Gorge. The best part of the road is the Moki Saddle, in the past always the bugbear of motorists, and the worst part is at the foot of the Paparata Saddle. Here there is metal in plenty but the roadmen still rake the clay into the cavernous ruts though metal supplies are right alongside. It is a disgrace to the authorities that this sort of thing should be tolerated.

The road is a main one, and could be metalled for a few hundred pounds. The public do not ask that the road should be regraded and the Mbki Saddle reconstructed, for that would involve heavy expense that in times like the present could not be justified, but they do ask that the metal on the sides of the road should be spread on to the surface and enable settlers and the travelling public to go to and from the back country whatever the state of the weather.
