Mr. W. Perry, Auckland, is spending a few days at New Plymouth.

Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Fenton, Fiji, and formerly of New Plymouth, are spending an extended holiday at New Plymouth.

Messrs J. P. Luke and A. O. Heany, Wellington, of the central organisation of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, visited Hawera last night and discussed matters of interest at a meeting of business men called by the Hawera Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Heany gave an address on the true functions of government. Messrs Luke and Heany will meet Stratford business men at luncheon to-day and will attend a meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce at New Plymouth to-night. Mr. Will Hutchens, the well-known music teacher and conductor, has gained the degre of Bachelor of Music. The Wanganui Herald states that this is. a reward for careful study and devotion to the art and for Mr. Hutchens’ ability to compose music up to the standard required by the University examiner, who, it is understood, was on this occasion Dr. Percy Buck, of the University of London. Mr. Hutchens’ composition is a choral work entitled “A Song of Praise, the words’ being taken from some of the Psalms of David. The composition, which runs to 100 pages, '. a full orchestral score and includes four choruses and a quartette, the latter being the only unaccompanied portion of the work, which takes about twenty minutes to perform.
