SOUTHLAND CHEESE

HEAVY SALES REPORTED. FIVEPENCE A POUND RULES. i Substantial forward buying of cheese is reported from the Southland district, and it is stated that upward of 2000 tons, white and coloured, have been disposed of at 5d per lb. It is reported that buyers have contracted for all in store until the end of the season. The price is considered a very favourable one under present conditions. Offers were made first at 41d per lb., but they advanced to 4| and and 5d within a few days, the bulk of business being done at the latter figure. Several factories are concerned in the sale, it is stated. The Southland district has earned a name in the cheese trade owing to the general policy of the companies there of selling quickly. When prices are available, agents invariably approach the Southland companies first.
