ELTHAM LADIES’ GOLF. CLUB OPENING YESTERDAY. Metallic clinkings of iron clubs and crisp impact of well hit drives mingled with the excited undertone <jf conversation on the Eltham golf links yesterday when the ladies opened their season with a foursome and a putting competition. Visitors were present from Stratford, Hawera, Matapu and Mangamingi and under the organisation of the secretary, Mrs. A. A. Stewart, all enjoyed a good day. Scores generally were creditable enough for the first day although several players failed to record their rounds for public inspection on the board. Trophies were presented to the winners by Lady Carncross. Results of the competitions are:— Non-handicap players (five holes): Mrs. 0. Cox (Hawera) 29, Mrs. J. McKay ‘Eltham) 32. Non-handicap putting: Mrs. J. McKoy 1, Mrs. Leo Abbott 2. Foursome handicap: .Mrs. L. Quin and Miss North 50, Miss Pease and Mrs. Lambie 50, Mrs. Morton and Mrs. Mark 53, Mrs. Boon and Miss Sangstcr 53, Miss Sangster and Miss Henry 54, Miss Townsend and Mrs. Haswell 56. In the play-off over three holes, after a close contest, Mrs. L. Quin and Miss North (Stratford) beat Mrs. Lambie and Miss Pease by a couple of strokes. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. C. V. Smith, formerly headmaster of the Rawhitiroa school and now of Dunedin, was a visitor to Eltham this week. Mr. and Mrs. Craigie, Craigilea, Timara, arrived at Stratford on Monday evening and were the guests of Mr. W. L. Kennedy. They left yesterday evening for Tahora, where a visit will be paid to their daughter, Mrs. R. G. Kennedy. GENERAL ITEMS. Fostering Junior Football. One of the Rugby clubs that has realised the necessity for fostering the game in the lower grades is Toko, which has always tried to develop its junior players The fact was remarked on at the annual meeting of the club on Monday night, when Mr. T. T. Murray urged that the practice be continued in the future.
