MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

STRATFORD COUNCIL PROSPECTS. MAYORALTY MAY BE CONTESTED. So far residents of Stratford have not displayed any great interest in the approaching municipal elections, which is to be held on May 3. As far as the Stratford Borough Council is concerned it appears that some new blood will ha y to be obtained if a full council is to sit, as of the present nine councillors one stated definitely that he would not staid again, four are undecided and two will stand providing there Is an election aad not just the correct number of nominees. Only one councillor s'gnified definitely that he would accept re-nomination.

The Mayor (Mr. P. Thomson) to±d a News reporter yesterday that he would accept re-nomination, and he may have an opponent in Mr. C. R. Finnerty, present chairman of the works committee of the council, who intimated that he hod been asked to contest the Mayoralty. However, he would not say as yet whether he would agree to that or whether he would consider re-nomination to the council.

Cr. A. J. Davey is the one who has resolved not to seek re-election, and judging by the tenor of the remarks made by Crs. N. B. Fletcher, A. H. Nelson and J. W. Crowe, they have yot to make up their minds whether they will accept nomination. Cr. A. H. Trotter will not be in the field if only the required nine are nominated. Should the entries exceed the number of places available he will stand as he wants to know if burgesses will back him in the policy be has pursued on the council. Cr. R. F, Harkness is of much the same mind. Cr. R. E. Carryer, who gained his seat by beating Mr. F. P. D. Jeffries in a by-election after Cr. C Moore’s death, will consent to nomination. Cr. C. H. Speek is absent from Stratford at present.
