CAUGHT IN THE BACKWASH

GREYMOUTH BATHER DROWNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. Arthur Nicholson, aged 30 and single, a native of Cumberland, was drowned at 11 a.m. to-day at Rapahoe Beach while surfing with other members of a picnic party. The tide was falling and a backwash unexpectedly set in, carrying away Nicholson, who was able to swim. Fair seas were running, and though John Boucher secured a grip on Nicholson a wave parted them and when next seen Nicholson was 30 yards out, and he disappeared.
