MAN FALLS ACROSS LINE

ALIGHTING FROM MOVING TRAIN. DEATH OF TIMOTHY TOOMEY. Losing his footing on a slowly moving train at the Kiore railway station about 8.45 o’clock on Saturday evening a single man, Timothy Toomey, aged _ 47 years, whose mother lives near Wellington, was drawn beneath the wheels to his death. Mr. Toomey was employed on Mr. Stockley’s farm, Kiore. He seemed to step off the carriage, which was moving at about four miles an hour, facing towards the guard’s van. A passenger, Mr. W. S. Kelly, Tangarakau, noticed him leave the carriage, but no one, so far as is known, actually witnessed the fatality. It is presumed, however, that Mr. Toomey in facing the wrong way lost his balance on reaching the ground and fell inwards across the rails. Only the guard’s van followed the carriage from which Mr. Toomey fell. The body was taken on by the train to Whangamomona, where an inquest for identification will be opened to-day.
