PAYMENT OF FARM RATES

STRATFORD COUNCIL’S PROPOSAL.

OPPOSITION IN HAWERA COUNTY.

“The less we rely on our Government and the : more we rely on ourselves in matters of this sort, the better off we shall be,” said the chairman (Mr. J. B. Murdoch) when a letter was received by the Hawera County Council on Saturday from the Stratford County Council urging concerted action to persuade the Government to pay all farmers rates to local bodies for the current year, and at the same time to waive its demand for land tax. . The meeting was unanimously opposed to the proposition, it being considered obvious that if the Government paid the farmers’ rates someone would have to pay the Government; no proposal was contained in the Stratford communication as to the ultimate source of the money. _ The receipt of the letter by the Eltham County Council on Saturday caused some amusement. x Cr. A. V. Messana (facetiously): I move that we support that. Cr. Brown: I second. The chairman (Mr. A. L. Campbell): ft is an awful thing. I do not feel inclined to comment on. it. Cr. Knuckey: We might as well support it. There is no hope of getting it On a division being ailed four were in favour and three against.
