JERSEY CLASSIFICATION
MR. G. H. BELL COMPLETES TOUR.
IMPRESSIONS OF THE TRIP.
Mr. Guy H. Bell, Oakura, a member of the classification committee of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association, has just completed a tour of the North Island with the committee, during which they classified 80 pedigree Jersey herds in various parts of the North Island, comprising over 700 head of cattle. That easily constitutes a record, the previous highest classification being 600 head of pedigree Jersey cattle, representative of both. Islands. Mr. Bell expressed himself as very pleased with the quality generally of the cattle inspected, whilst their condition also left little to be desired. Mr. Bell states that some parts of the North Island are looking very dry, particularly the Pukekohe district, which he visited just before Christmas, and the East Coast. Generally speaking Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu districts are looking very well, though there are some strips of Hawke’s Bay that are always more or less dry. Practically right through dairy production had shown an increase during the early part of the season. It was noticeable that much hay and ensilage had been saved everywhere, while there had been more cropping this year than usual, farmers apparently having more generally favoured swedes, mangolds and grain. Mr. Bell said that- in the Gisborne district the depression seemed to be talked more about than in, say, Hamilton and New Plymouth, and there seemed to be more unemployed. Possibly that might be owing to the fact that because of its more isolated position Gisborne did not see so much outside traffic as did the other places.
