DISPLAY AT WEST END

WORK OF SCHOOL PUPILS. PRACTICAL EDUCATION TREND. The annual display of work at the West End school, New Plymouth, yesterday must have provided many visiting parents and friends with no small surprise. In each classroom was arranged the work of the pupils, and it varied from the plasticene and paper-cutting of the tiny children in . the primers to delicate needlework, clever drawings and useful woodwork .articles made by the children of the upper standards. The arrangement of the exhibits reflected credit on the headmaster (Mr. J. Shimmin) and his staff, as well.as upon the children, for tasteful floral decorations and greenery brightened and beautified the rooms. Plasticene work and articles cut from coloured papers represented the labours of the children in the lower primers, while writing, drawing and sewing were additional exhibits seen in the rooms of the upper* primers. Standards l .and 2 rooms displayed needlework and coloured drawings. The standard 4 pupils added metal and pewter work to their array, as well as articles from the woodwork class. All manner of such things as cleverly-made clothes-horses, traySj fiddles, model aeroplanes, trays and towel rollers were among the woodwork articles shown, by standards 5 and 6. House-names,- calendars and stands in pewter and brasswork, as well as bright paintings, excellent drawings and dainty needlework were also included. The work of the special- class of 16 pupils evoked much favourable comment from the visitors. In the special building where this work was displayed were trays, baskets, shopping bags, pewter work, cleverly covered tins and many needlework articles made by both boys and girls. The display accentuated the modem practical trend of education,. and the visitor left the school grounds filled with admiration not only for the work of the children but also the art of the teachers.
